The Pro Sand Drags Association (PSDA) made their first trip to Michigan in late June for the “Mayhem in the Mitten” event in Mears, MI. PSDA runs an ATV-only (or Motorcycle-powered vehicles) format at their events with a mix of Heads-Up, Index, and Bracket racing classes over the course of three days. This event was Race 2 of their 2013 season after starting off the year with the Gator Nationals in Gilbert, Louisiana. Racers from as far away as Louisiana, Florida, and Missouri made the long haul to take part in this event.

Open Bracket Class
 
The big class of the weekend would be the Open Bracket class. This would be open to any ATV or Motorcycle-powered Vehicle with a Guaranteed Payout of $2000 Win / $1000 Runner-Up. The staging lanes were full in round one with a whopping sixty-six (66) entries making the call. When it was all said and done, the final two standing would set up quite a final round. Missouri’s MDR Racing #49 entry fought through some tough competition in early rounds to line up against Michigan’s Dan Turner in the Wanna Play Racing Motorcycle-powered Mini-Buggy to decide not only who would take home the trophy, but also the lion’s share of the purse money. As the dust settled, the win light turned on in Turner’s lane as the Mini-Buggy ran a 4.63 (4.61) with a .022 RT to win the $2000 prize money.

Heads-Up Classes
 
In PSDA competition, the Big Boys of the circuit are in the Unlimited 4-cylinder Open category. The action would be intense on Saturday night with racers not only going for the win, but also a $500 cash bonus put up by Proformance Prototypes and Bennett Motorsports for Low ET of the event. Heading into the Qualifying Round, Mike Goodale in the “Xtreme Thing” had Low ET earlier in the weekend with a 3.36. That mark wouldn’t last for long as Louisiana’s Jeff Guillot ripped off a solid 3.32/92MPH to not only take Low ET of the event, but also take the #1 qualifying spot heading into eliminations. Eliminations came down to the top two qualifiers as Guillot would line up against his son Kyler in an all-Louisiana final round. The win light would turn on in Kyler’s lane in a 3.52 to 3.63 decision as Jeff’s Nitrous didn’t turn on slowing him from his earlier pace. Other big winners from the Heads-Up categories included Jeff Guillot (Limited 4 Cyl Open),  Josh Calhoun (Unlim 3 Cyl Open), Madd Draggin’ Racing (Unlimited Twin Open & Twin 0-650, and Limited Twin Open), Precision Powersports (Unlimited & Limited Twin 0-775), Jeff Ross (Unlimited Single Open), Steph Bennett (Limited Twin 0-650), Rich Wood (Limited Twin 0-525), Mark Herek (Heavy Hitters), and Allie Guillot (Junior Heads-Up).

Index Classes
 
Another popular aspect of the PSDA events is the full menu of Index classes. They have classes with .2 time breaks from 3.4 all the way to 4.2. These categories see some of the closest racing all weekend. None was any more competitive than the 4.0 Index class, which had an amazing 23 entries make the round one call. The final round would be an all-Kentucky affair as two of the state’s best in Eddie Epling and Gary Butler squared off for top honors. They would be locked wheel to wheel all the way down with Epling taking the win in a thrilling 4.01 to 4.02 decision. Other winners from the Index categories included Kyler Guillot (3.4 Index), Jim Hunt (3.6 Index), Tex English (3.8 Index), and Jeff Foucha (4.2 Index).
