As summer wore on, NSDN’s Daily Race Coverage season continued on to our first ever trip to Newtown Dragway in Newtown, Virginia for PTN’s East Coast Nationals in early August. This was one I had looked forward to all season, and it definitely did not disappoint. This facility is absolutely stunning with incredible detail work to complement the valley setting, hooking track surface, top notch timing equipment, and stadium lighting for night racing. Despite battling the weather all weekend, the Newtown & PTN crews worked hard to put on a great event for all. The racing on track was fierce, and it was great to see many of the East Coast Trucks & ATV racers that we had only read about in the past. These guys are excellent racers. NSDN Run of the Event: The PTN 3.95 Index Pro ATV class was introduced in 2013 and has seen some of the best competition throughout the series. With many Pro ATV racers having their rides set up in the 3.9-4.0 range there’s always a great group of racers wherever the series travels to. Up to this point, the fifth race overall for this class nobody had recorded a perfect 3.950 pass. Qualifying saw Newtown saw several racers shoot for that dead-on number and end up on the fast side of the Index. One of these was Pennsylvania racer Jason Thompson, who recorded a 3.947 on his first qualifying pass. Jason then came back in Q2 and went 4.011 which held up for the #1 qualifying spot. That top qualifying position earned Jason a bye in round one where he once again missed the Index on the fast side, this time by a mere .001 with a 3.949 ET. This set the stage for his round two match up with Scott Stotesberry. Scott would turn on the red light giving Thompson the win at the tree, but Jason ran it out the back door to see what it would run. The scoreboard said it all 3.950 ET, the first Perfect Run in the PTN 3.95 Index Pro ATV history. Jason would go on to win the event earning him a clean sweep of the weekend by earning the class win, top qualifier, and perfect run. This event was the first leg on Jason’s PTN 3.95 Index Pro ATV series championship.
NSDN Racer of the Event: Hands down, the racer of this event was Terrell Allen. This was an awesome story on the weekend at Newtown as Terrell and his crew manages the Newtown ATV Drag Racing series events. On this weekend, his crew chipped in helping with the race, but Terrell also had the opportunity to jockey Michigan racer Ricky Thorpe’s Rigger Racing Pumpkin Pro ATV. Ricky entered The Pumpkin in the Twin-Cylinder Shootout head-sup class, where Q1 was Terrell’s first attempt on this ride. Terrell had ridden fast ATV’s in the past, but he had been out of the saddle a few years. Jaws dropped when the scoreboard lit up in Q1 as Terrell ran a 3.69/87MPH on this pass, one of the quickest passes Ricky’s ride had run this season. This would be good enough for the #3 qualifying position in the tough class. Round one saw Terrell hit the tree solid with a .079 RT and run an excellent 3.63/86MPH. The solid performance continued on in round two as The Pumpkin ride went 3.64/86MPH to advance to the final round. This battle shaped up to be killer as Allen faced off with Michael Myrick piloting Tony Miller’s potent Pro ATV. Once again Terrell did his job on the tree taking a .078 to .135 edge and never looking back with a 3.65/86MPH! Rarely do you see somebody that’s a pure natural rider put on a show in the ATV sand drag world, and Terrell did just that on this day at Newtown Dragway. Congrats to Terrell & Rigger Racing on the awesome performance.

Green Beauty: This was the first time in PTN action that Pennsylvania racer Vince Morgan brought out his stunning S-10. Vince’s ride is immaculate. The S-10 is powered by an alcohol injected small block Chevy. Vince was sorting out the bugs in the new ride all weekend and working on the suspension getting it all dialed in; his Best ET on the weekend was 4.12.
Camaro Action: Richard Smitherman got the job done in the Sportsman Car in his unique sand drag ride. Richard’s ride is a big block Chevy-powered Camaro drag car. This car hooks and runs well with ET’s in the 4.7-second zone. Richard outlasted the Sportsman Car class, and then used a killer .027 RT to earn the Ironman trophy over the Sportsman ATV class winner. It was definitely a great weekend for Team Camaro.
Crowd Pleasers: Fast trucks are everywhere at Newtown Dragway. The local racers have some serious horsepower that are set up great for going fast & being consistent while bracket racing. Thomas Carneal’s “Crowd Pleaser” Mopar-powered Dodge Dakota recorded Low ET of the weekend with a 3.36. This ride truck has some serious steam under the hood and great hook for a sand drag truck recording a 1.29 60’ time. He would then turn the nitrous off and run ultra consistent 3.9’s in bracket mode. John T. Davis was also very impressive with his full size Chevy Truck. John’s big block Chevy-power propelled him to consistent 4.1-second ET’s en route to the Pro Cars class victory. Another of the killer trucks was Hunter Brooks’ “Black Truck”. Hunter was both deadly consistent in ET & RT in Sportsman Car class action all day long. In the final, he went .005 red but still had a solid weekend of racing.
